Celebrating Global Accessibility Awareness Day

Accessibility isn't an optional extra, it's the foundation of good design. That belief runs through everything we do at focusgov. As Head of Design and Inclusion, I’ve seen first-hand how inaccessible digital services can shut people out and how thoughtful design can open doors.
Today, on Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), I want to share with you why accessibility matters, why I love this work, and what happens when clients put their trust in a team that truly cares.
Designing for Everyone
As Head of Design and Inclusion at focusgov, I get to combine creativity with purpose every day. We work with local authorities across the UK to ensure their digital services are accessible, usable, and inclusive, particularly for some of the most vulnerable users.
We’ve been proud to support councils like North Ayrshire and Camden, making their care leavers apps more accessible for young people navigating the difficult transition to independent living. Right now, we're deep into accessibility audits and fixes for multiple other councils, continuing our commitment to making sure no one is left behind.
What Accessibility Really Means
Accessibility isn't just about screen readers or colour contrast, though those are important. It's about dignity, independence, and equal access to opportunities. It's about making sure someone who processes information differently, or who uses assistive tech, can still find a safe place to live, apply for benefits, or access mental health support – just like anyone else.
For us, accessibility is a non-negotiable. It’s not a box to tick or a feature to bolt on. It’s a mindset.
Proud to Be Part of the Change
Being part of this mission is a privilege. One of the reasons I love my job is because I get to be a voice for people who are often overlooked in digital design. Whether it's making a page easier to navigate for someone with a cognitive disability or ensuring an app works seamlessly when zoomed in for those with visual impairments, every fix we make has the potential to change someone’s experience for the better.
And we don't just deliver audits and walk away. When clients trust us with the accessibility of their digital solutions, they’re getting real care - from our project/account managers who genuinely listen and guide, a designer who thinks deeply about inclusive journeys, and our developers who take care of the complex technical work that underpins accessibility.
Tech for Good is More Than a Slogan
We believe in Tech for Good, not as a buzzword, but as a responsibility. Technology should be a force for inclusion and progress, but that only happens when it's accessible to everyone.
On Global Accessibility Awareness Day 2025, I’m proud to stand with so many others who are working to make digital spaces more open, welcoming, and equitable. The best design begins with accessibility at its heart.
If you’re a local authority wondering how we could support you with accessible digital solutions, we’d love to help. Please do get in touch with our team at focusgov.
