The Brief

Delivered by Barnardo's, Sandwell's Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service (SEND IASS), is an impartial information, advice and support service for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The service is impartial, confidential and free for those that require assistance in Sandwell.

Our Approach

The SEND IASS team faced several challenges in providing comprehensive support to families and young people:

  • Complex Information: The process of accessing SEND IASS support and understanding the available resources was often perceived as complicated and overwhelming.
  • Limited Accessibility: Families and young people struggled to access information about SEND IASS services, frequently relying on physical resources or complex processes.

In response to these challenges, the team worked with focusgov to create the Sandwell SEND IASS website, which offered several key features:

  • Comprehensive Information: The website provided clear, concise, and up-to-date information on SEND IASS services, local provisions, and guidance for families and young people.
  • User-Friendly Design: The website's user interface was designed to be intuitive, making it easier for families and young people to find the information they needed without confusion.
  • Interactive Resources: It included interactive tools, such as guides, videos, and FAQs, to help users better understand the SEND IASS process and their rights.

The implementation of the SEND IASS website brought numerous benefits:

  • Enhanced Accessibility: Families and young people had 24/7 access to information and support, reducing the need for physical visits or lengthy phone calls.
  • Empowerment: Users reported feeling more empowered and informed about their rights and the available support, resulting in more effective advocacy for their children's needs.
  • Reduced Administrative Burden: The website streamlined administrative processes, allowing SENDIASS staff to focus on delivering high-quality support.

The results

Sandwell’s SEND IASS website has successfully transformed access to support for families and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. By providing comprehensive information, a user-friendly design, interactive resources, and an online consultation platform, the website has empowered service users, improved communication, and reduced administrative overhead. Sandwell’s commitment to enhancing accessibility and support services through technology is a noteworthy success.
